Ambassador (ret.) Hans-Udo Muzel, Germany Ambassador (ret.) Hans-Udo Muzel, a career diplomat of the German Senior Foreign Service, most recently served as the German Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran before retiring from active diplomatic service in autumn 2024. He is scheduled to be posted to Qatar in June 2025 to assume the role of interim Head of Mission as Chargé d’affaires a.i. at the German Embassy in Doha. Prior to his mission as Germany’s Ambassador in Tehran (July 2020 to August 2024), he served as German Ambassador to the State of Qatar from 2015 to 2020. Prior to that, he served as the Director of the International Conferences & Summits Task Force and the German G7 Presidency Task Force. Earlier in his career, he served as Deputy Head of Mission at the German embassies in Amman and Kuwait and worked in various other positions at the German Federal Foreign Office and as an exchange diplomat in the Middle East Directorate General of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague. His other overseas tours include Muscat, Rabat and Kuala Lumpur. He holds a degree in Public Administration, and attended Arabic language and history programmes at the Middle East Centre London, Jordan University and Kuwait University. He served in the German Navy prior to joining the Foreign Service. He is an engaged participant in the Doha Forum conferences and a member of the Advisory Board of the German Near & Middle East Association. In 2020, Ambassador Muzel was awarded the Al Wajbah Order of Merit by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar. He is married to Lilian Muzel-Kiviet, a Dutch national, and they have two sons.
