General Information
The purpose of an au pair stay is to enhance German language skills and broaden cultural understanding. To work as an au pair in Germany, applicants must be at least 18 years old and no older than 26 years at the time of application. The minimum duration of the stay is 6 months, with a maximum stay of 12 months. An au pair stay may only be undertaken once.
A visa or residence permit will not be issued if the host family and the au pair are related. In general, German must be the primary language spoken within the host family.
Au pairs are required to possess German language skills at a minimum of level A1, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Submitting an application
Necessary documents
In addition to the application form, please ensure that you bring the following documents to your appointment at the Embassy.
In certain cases, the Embassy may request additional documents.
A valid passport, signed by the holder, issued within the last 10 years and with a minimum validity of one year, is required. The passport must contain at least two consecutive blank pages. Please ensure you bring the original passport to your appointment.
One fully biometric passport photo, measuring 35 x 45 mm, taken within the last three months. Digitally altered photos will not be accepted. Please ensure that your photo complies with German biometric standards and is taken against a white or light-colored background.
Please bring your valid Qatar residence permit (QID) to the appointment.

An exam certificate confirming a minimum A1 level, issued by a recognised examination provider, is required. Accepted providers include, but are not limited to the ,Goethe-Institut e.V., telc GmbH, Austrian Language Diploma (ÖSD), TestDaF-Institut e.V., ECL Examination Center (examination provider, examination conducted by AFU GmbH))
Confirmation of health insurance cover (including accident insurance, ”Unfallversicherung“) by the German public health insurance (”gesetzliche Krankenversicherung“)
