Family reunion: child to parent(s) living in Germany

General information
Applications for a minor must be filed by all parents/ guardians. The minor and all parents and guardians need to be present for the application. Should one or both parent/s and/ or guardian/s be unavailable/ overseas at the time of application, we will require a “declaration of consent”, notarised by a notary public in Qatar/ any EU member state or any German mission overseas.
Submitting an application
Required Documents
Please bring the following documents in the specified order to your appointment at the Embassy. Additional documents may be requested in certain cases.
A valid passport, signed by the holder, issued within the last 10 years and with a minimum validity of one year, is required. The passport must contain at least two consecutive blank pages. Please ensure you bring the original passport to your appointment.
One fully biometric passport photo, measuring 35 x 45 mm, taken within the last three months. Digitally altered photos will not be accepted. Please ensure that your photo complies with German biometric standards and is taken against a white or light-colored background.
Please bring your valid Qatar residence permit (QID) to the appointment.
Birth Certificate of the Child
(Original and photocopy)
If the certificate was issued outside of Germany, the EU, or Qatar, it must be legalized or apostilled as required.
Any document in a language other than German, English, or French must be translated into one of these languages by a certified or sworn translator.
Proof of Custody of the Child
(e.g., marriage certificate, custody declaration, court decision, death certificate of a parent, etc.)
A passport copy of the parent(s) residing in Germany
- If the family member is not a German citizen, a copy of their residence permit must be submitted.
- If the family member is a German citizen, a copy of their ID card may be provided instead of the passport.
Proof of German Language Skills
(This requirement does not apply to children under the age of 16.)
For children aged 16 years and older, a minimum language proficiency level of C1, in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, is required. Accepted proof includes certificates issued by institutions such as the Goethe Institute, ÖSD, or any other examination provider authorized by ALTE.
Please provide a copy of the rental agreement or hotel reservation covering the first six months of your stay in Germany.
Proof of Financial Means of the Parent in Germany
(e.g., salary certificate, bank statement, employment contract)
This requirement does not apply to children of German citizens or recognized refugees in Germany.
Children of EU citizens may provide the parent's employment contract; a salary certificate is not required.
